What is the 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant?

  • A competitive Federal Grant Program established to develop or expand comprehensive out-of-school opportunities to high poverty communities that provide academic enrichment and developmental activities to struggling students and their partners/families
  • Five years of funding with goal of sustainability

Vision
The help youth develop to their full potential academically, socially and physically by building on the strengths of schools, families and communities.

Mission
To provide after school programs that help students and families:

  • Increase engagement in learning

  • Increase educational equity

  • Build skills necessary for success in today economy

What are the goals of this grant?

  • Assist youth in meeting state and local achievement standards in core subjects – reading and math by offering high quality after-school academic enrichment and summer extension programs
  • Coordinate curricula between classrooms and after-school/summer programs to reinforce enrich and compliment students learning experiences.
  • Provide parents with learning opportunities that help them acquire new skills and support the academic success of their child

What does the program look like?
The 21st Century Community Learning Center includes an after school program at 14 elementary schools in Mukilteo, Marysville and Kent from 2:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., 4 days a week (Monday through Thursday).

  • 4 schools in Marysville:  Liberty, Shoultes, Tulalip and Quil Ceda
  • 3 schools in Mulikteo: Challenger, Horizon, and Odessey
  • 7 schools in Kent: Park Orchard, Daniel, Kent, Meadow Ridge, Scenic Hill, Neely O¹Brien, and Panther Lake

What are the components of the program?

Extended classroom academics in math and reading

  • Innovative small group instruction
  • Tutoring and mentoring
  • Applied learning and project-based activities
  • Hands-on learning and real world connections
  • Recreational and supervised games
  • Extended summer school program

How are parents involved?

  • Parents or extended family members will provide feedback on their needs
  • Family educational opportunities will then be provided to match parent requests
  • Sample opportunities include:  Adult literacy classes, GED classes, Educational skills training, Computer and technology training, Parenting skills, Family support services

What is the Role of the Community Resource Team?

  • Overall monitoring of project design and effectiveness
  • Development and implementation of “Sustainability Plan”
  • Create public awareness campaign and communicate need for After School 21st Century Community Learning Centers
  • Obtain corporate and community support for After School 21st Community Learning Centers
  • Hold annual community benefit to fund After-school 21st Century Community Learning Centers
  • Ensure sustainability beyond five-year grant funding
