Reading LINKS is a multi-media program that provides information and models ways to incorporate scientific reading research in classroom instruction. Reading LINKS began by filming teachers who demonstrated the five components of reading instruction included in the Report of the National Reading Panel (NRP).

For information about scheduling a Reading LINKS training, please contact the Washington Alliance for Better Schools by calling (425) 408-7956 or emailing info@allianceforbetterschools.org

These components of reading instruction include:

  1. phonemic awareness instruction
  2. phonics instruction
  3. fluency instruction
  4. vocabulary instruction
  5. comprehension instruction

Reading LINKS was expanded to include early oral language development, English Language Learners, turning a school around, and strategic change. A total of 18 lessons are provided on the LINKS website (www.linkslearning.org) as well as on CDs.

It is our hope that the electronic and print Reading LINKS materials will:

  • Provide information and models for new teachers
  • Stimulate discussion and experimentation with experienced teachers
  • Be useful in ensuring that all children learn to read and read well by the end of third grade
  • Continue their reading skills development throughout their school experience.

Reading LINKS also includes six training modules with participant materials that can be used in three to six hour workshops at schools, districts, regional or state conferences or meetings. The information provided in the lessons endeavors to provide teachers, administrators, parents, and citizens with information about ways reading research can be used to increase children’s reading skills.

The Reading LINKS field work involved teachers in Highline, Federal Way, Tukwila, Seattle, and Northshore School Districts. Dr. Ramona Chauvin from Western Washington University served as senior consultant to the Washington Alliance Schools. The teachers and reading consultants featured in the videos demonstrated a wealth of reading knowledge and understanding, skills in designing curriculum, and years of experience in instruction and assessment, as well as obvious concern and caring for the children they teach.
